PUZZLED North Korean diplomats have begged US politicians to help them understand Donald Trump.

Wrong-footed North Korean politicians have struggled to understand the new US President amidst growing tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

And fears about Trump's unpredictability have forced top-ranking North Koreans to hold secret talks with their US counterparts, the Washington Post claims.

One insider told the paper: "Their number one concern is Trump. They can’t figure him out."

Despite the talks, there is no indication that negotiations about North Korea's nuclear programme are close, the report added.

The revelation comes as Donald Trump tonight said he "will fix this mess" while maintaining a US military strike on Kim Jong-un's nation would be "devastating".

The President said Kim had been acting "very badly" and said the US is "totally prepared" for military action".

Relations between the nations hit a new-low last week when dictator Kim Jong-un and Trump traded personal insults.

The US commander in chief branded nuclear weapon-seeking Kim "rocket man", while Kim responded by labelling Trump a "dotard".

Outside the UN this week, North Korea's foreign minister said the US had "declared war" on North Korea.

He went on to say his nation reserved the right to shoot down American bombers - even outside of North Korean airspace.

The rising tensions come as Pyongyang continues to test ICBMs.

Earlier this month, the totalitarian regime is widely believed to have carried out an underground test of a hydrogen bomb.
